In-Depth Information
either Split or Kor č ula, the catamarans are much better, since their departure point is more
convenient and they make the trip faster. As always, it's essential to confirm your plans in
advance—boat schedules are subject to change.
Boats from Hvar Town to Split and Kor č ula Island: The handy Krilo catamaran,
which runs daily year-round, heads for Split twice daily in summer (departs Hvar at 11:00
and 19:30, May-Oct only—does not run Nov-April, 50-60 minutes; in Hvar, Krilo tickets
are sold at Pelegrini travel agency); this schedule is often in flux, so it's essential to confirm
the schedule at www.krilo.hr (or ask local TIs or Pelegrini). A Jadrolinija catamaran also
connects Hvar town to Split (year-round: one boat departs Hvar Mon-Sat at 6:35 or Sun at
9:15, another boat departs Mon-Sat at 7:25 or Sun at 14:35; June-Sept: there's also a boat
daily at 13:45; 1-1.5 hours), once daily to Kor č ula town (departs Hvar at 18:15 in summer,
17:00 in winter, 1.75-2 hours), and once daily to Vela Luka (at the far end of Kor č ula Is-
land, a 1-hour bus ride to Kor č ula town; departs Hvar at 16:15 in summer, 15:15 in winter,
1 hour).
Note: Remember, it's smart to buy tickets for these popular catamarans as early as pos-
sible. This is especially important for the morning departures to Split, which always sell out
(afternoon departures to Kor č ula Island are a bit less crowded). Tickets go on sale at 8:00 in
the morning on the day before departure—don't dilly-dally.
Big Jadrolinija Car Ferries from Stari Grad: Jadrolinijarunsfrequentlocalcarferries
from Stari Grad to Split (7/day in summer, 3/day in winter, 1.75 hours). Additionally, twice
weekly in summer (June-Sept only), big boats run up and down the Dalmatian coast, head-
ing north to Split (1.75 hours), and south to Kor č ula town (3.75 hours) and Dubrovnik
(8.75 hours).
Overland Connections
Hvar's buses only connect you to other parts of the island. For farther-flung destinations
(such as Dubrovnik or Zagreb), you'll take a boat to Split, then connect by bus from there.
In summer, frequent buses cross the island between Hvar town and Stari Grad, and there's
always a bus coordinated to meet the big ferries at Stari Grad (in which case you want Stari
Grad's “Trajekt” stop rather than its Old Town stop); off-season, not every boat is coordin-
ated with a bus. Most of the Stari Grad buses use the new road and stop at Milna, while one
per day uses the old road.
Drivers heading north can drive 20 minutes to Stari Grad and catch the car ferry right to

1.5 hours) down the length of Hvar Island to the town of Su ć uraj, where you can catch the
car ferry to Drvenik; from Drvenik, you can drive along the mainland, or catch a different
