Jorge Ubico
Estrada Cabrera was overthrown in 1920 and Guatemala entered a period of instability,
ending in 1931 with the election of General Jorge Ubico as president. Ubico insisted on
honesty in government, and modernized the country's health and social welfare infrastruc-
ture. His reign ended when he was forced into exile in 1944.
