a more lucrative alternative for some todosanteros today, as the amount of new construc-
tion in the valley demonstrates, not to mention the incorporation of urban elements into

Sights & Activities
Tuj K'man Txun
This ceremonial site, 500m up the uphill street beside the central plaza among trees on the
left of the road, consists of a few grassy mounds and two crosses with indications of con-
temporary Maya offerings. The more recently installed cross commemorates the incidents
of August 1982, when the army executed hundreds of alleged guerrilla collaborators, then
torched many homes.
MONUMENT
Museo Balam
(admission Q5; 8am-6pm) Todos Santos' museum is in a two-story house, along a sidestreet
one block east of the plaza. The collection of outfits and masks, traditional kitchen imple-
ments, archaeological finds and musical instruments comes to life when Fortunato, its cre-
ator and a community leader, is there to provide commentary.

Hiking
January to April are the best months for hitting the trails through Todos Santos' rugged
countryside but you can usually walk in the morning, before the weather closes in, year-
round. Get trail maps and info on hikes at Tienda Grupo de Mujeres, downstairs from
Hotel Casa Familiar.
Rigoberto Pablo Cruz
( 5206-0916; rigoguiadeturismo@yahoo.com) Knowledgeable, easy-going and English-speaking
todosantero Rigoberto leads walks of the area, including a climb to the peak of La Torre
followed by a descent to La Maceta. Another of Rigo's hikes reaches the isolated moun-
tain community of San Juan Atitán, where the women wear dazzling huipiles , in about
five hours, returning by bus to Todos Santos.
