In-Depth Information
In addition, Rigoberto leads two-day treks to Nebaj (Q800 per person with minimum of
two), including food and lodging in community dwellings. He also offers classes in both
Spanish and Mam.
HIKING
La Torre
One of the most spectacular destinations is La Torre (3837mm), the highest nonvolcanic
point in Central America. Take a bus east up the valley to the hamlet of La Ventosa (Q10,
one hour) from where it's a trail walk of 8km (about 1½ hours) through limestone and
gnarly huite trees to the top.
At the summit (marked by a radio mast), the southern horizon is dotted with almost a
dozen volcanoes from Tacaná on the Mexican border to Volcán Agua near Antigua.
HIKING
Las Cuevas
The walk to Las Cuevas, a sacred cave still used for Maya rituals, starts from La Maceta,
a tree growing out of rock beside a football field, 15 minutes by bus up the Huehue road
from Todos Santos (Q5).
Maya Sauna
Todos Santos' chilly climate makes a visit to the traditional Maya chuj especially inviting.
This is a small adobe building with wooden boards covering the entrance. A wood fire
burns in a stone hearth within, and water is sprinkled on the stones to provide steam. Also,
check out the chuj at the Hotel Casa Familiar.

( 4491-0220; r without bathroom Q50) This recently inaugurated option - perhaps constructed
with tools from the hardware store below - is quite clean and well-maintained, with func-
tional hot showers, quality mattresses and plenty of blankets for the evening chill. Around
200m east from the main square, turn left downhill by the Restaurante Bautista to find the
solitary pink concrete structure.
