In-Depth Information
Wreck of the Oro Verde : About half a mile off the beach at Villas of the
Galleon, the Oro Verde is a favorite with beginners because of its shallow
position (25 to 50 feet). The ship was used by drug smugglers ( Oro Verde
means “green gold” in Spanish, so we'll let you draw your own conclusions
about its cargo) and in 1980 was scuttled. Today, the gold is surrounded by
rich marine life; the high that divers get from the myriad colors is a com-
pletely legal one.
Royal Palms Ledge: This shallow area, offshore from the Royal Palms
Beach Club (page 181), is a favorite with both snorkelers and divers; the
reef starts at 46 feet. This site is also popular with night divers who come
for a view of shrimp and squid.
