The cobbled streets and busy promenade of
South Street Seaport
were devastated by Hur-
ricane Sandy in 2012 and recovery has been slow. The Howard Hughes Corporation is lead-
ing redevelopment of the area, with a brand new Pier 17 shopping mall expected to open in
2016 and plenty of restaurants already up and running.
The old
South Street Seaport Museum
, lodged in a series of painstakingly restored 1830s
warehouses showing maritime art and trade exhibits, is also expected to re-emerge in some
form, but was closed at the time of research. You can, however, visit moored ships like the
Peking (1911) and the 1908
Ambrose Lightship

May and September.
