Hall. MAP
At the north end of City Hall Park sits graceful City Hall , completed in 1812. It's the oldest
city hall in the US to retain its original government function; inside is the mayor's office and
city council. The sumptuous interior can be seen on free prearranged tours via the Art Com-
mission (Thurs 10am; 1hr; 212 788 2656, www.nyc.gov ) or by just signing up for the
public tours (Wed noon) at the tourist kiosk opposite the Woolworth Building.
THE WOOLWORTH BUILDING
233 Broadway between Barclay St and Park Place. Subway R to City Hall; #2, #3 to Park Place; #4, #5, #6 to
Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. Closed to the public. MAP
The world's tallest skyscraper until 1930, the Woolworth Building (792ft) exudes money,
ornament and prestige. The soaring, graceful lines of Cass Gilbert's 1913 “Cathedral of
Commerce” are fringed with Gothic-style gargoyles and elaborate decorations. Sadly, the
ornate lobby is now closed to sightseers.
