quilled hides, feathered bonnets, and objects of ceremonial significance. Completed in 1907
and in use till 1973, the Beaux Arts Customs House is itself part of the attraction; the
facade is adorned with elaborate statuary representing the major continents (carved by
Daniel Chester French) and the world's great commercial centres, while the spectacular
marble-clad Great Hall and Rotunda are beautifully decorated; the sixteen murals covering
the 135ft dome were painted by Reginald Marsh in 1937.

Having survived extensive modification, several fires, and nineteenth-century use as a hotel,
the three-storey, ochre-and-red-brick Fraunces Tavern was almost totally reconstructed in
1907 to mimic its appearance on December 4, 1783, when, after hammering the Brits, a
weeping George Washington took leave of his assembled officers, intent on returning to rur-
al life in Virginia. The Long Room where his speech was made has been decked out in the
style of the time, while the adjacent Federal-style Clinton Room is smothered in florid
French wallpaper from 1838. The tavern's upper floors contain exhibits tracing the site's
