BATTERY PARK
Subway #1 to South Ferry; #4, #5 to Bowling Green; R to Whitehall St. MAP
Lower Manhattan lets out its breath in Battery Park , a bright and breezy landscaped area in
which memorials and souvenir vendors lead up to a sweeping view of America's largest har-
bour. The squat 1811 Castle Clinton (daily 8am-5pm; free), on the west side of the park, is
the place to buy tickets for and board ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, visible
in the distance. At the bottom of Broadway, the park entrance holds the city's first official
memorial to the victims of September 11; its focal point is the cracked 15ft steel-and-bronze
sculpture The Sphere - designed by Fritz Koenig to represent world peace. The sculpture
once stood in the WTC Plaza and survived the collapse of the towers.
