CRIME
In two words: don't worry. New York has come a long way in recent years. While the city
can sometimes feel dangerous, the reality is somewhat different. New York is America's
safest city with a population over one million. Take the normal precautions and you should
be fine; carry bags closed and across your body, don't let cameras dangle, keep wallets in
front - not back - pockets, and don't flash money around. You should also keep a firm grip
on your iPod on the subway (these are occasionally snatched just as the doors close). Mug-
ging can and does happen, but rarely during the day. Avoid wandering empty streets or the
subway late at night (especially alone). If you are unlucky enough to be mugged, try to stay
calm and hand over the money.
