You enter at the
Great Hall
, where you can consult floor plans and check tour times. From
here the Grand Staircase leads to the museum's greatest attraction - the
European Painting
galleries
. Dutch painting is particularly strong, embracing an impressive range of Rem-
brandts, Hals and Vermeers - his
Young Woman with a Water Jug
is a perfect example of
his skill in composition and tonal gradation, combined with an uncannily naturalistic sense
of lighting; you'll also find such masters as Goya, Velázquez, and a room of freaky, dazzling
canvases by El Greco, each of which underscores the jarring modernism of his approach.
