In-Depth Information
The Museum's Asian art section is justly celebrated for its Japanese screens and Buddhist
statues, and the Chinese Garden Court, a serene, minimalist retreat; a pagoda, small water-
fall and stocked goldfish pond landscaped with limestone rocks, trees and shrubs create a
sense of peace.
Close to being a museum in its own right, the American Wing is a thorough introduction
to the development of fine art in America, with a vast collection of paintings, period fur-
niture, glass, silverware and ceramics. The undeniable standout of the Egyptian collection is
the Temple of Dendur , built by the emperor Augustus in 15 BC and moved here en masse
as a gift of the Egyptian government during the construction of the Aswan High Dam in
1965.
Thanks to a magnificent renovation completed in 2007, one of the largest collections of
Roman and Greek art in the world occupies some of the most attractive wings of the mu-
seum; check out the wonderfully bright Greek Sculpture Court , a fittingly elegant setting
for sixth-to fourth-century BC marble sculptures.
Whatever you do choose to see, between May and October be sure to ascend to the Cantor
Roof Garden for incredible views and changing contemporary sculpture exhibits.
