Get in the rink for some of the city's most atmospheric ice skating; you're surrounded by
onlookers, trees and, beyond that, a brilliant view of Central Park South's skyline. In sum-
mers, Wollman Rink becomes Victorian Gardens , a small amusement park.

This small zoo contains over 150 species in largely natural-looking homes with the animals
as close to the viewer as possible: the penguins, for example, swim around at eye level in
Plexiglas pools. Other highlights include giant polar bears, snow leopards and a humid trop-
ical zone filled with exotic birds. The complex also features the Tisch Children's Zoo , with
a petting zoo.
THE CAROUSEL
Mid-park at 64th St. Subway A, B, C, D, #1, to 59th St-Columbus Circle. 212 439 6900. Daily: April-Oct

Built in 1908 and moved to the park from Coney Island in 1951, this hand-carved, wooden
carousel is one of around 150 such specimens left in the country.
THE MALL
Roughly mid-park from 66th to 72nd sts. Subway #6 to 68th St; B, C to 72nd St. MAP
If the weather's nice head straight to the Mall , where you'll find every manner of street per-
former. Flanked by statues of Robert Burns and a pensive Sir Walter Scott, with
Shakespeare nearby (all part of the so-called literary walk), the Mall is the park's most
formal, but by no means quiet, stretch.
THE SHEEP MEADOW
Between 66th and 69th sts on the western side. Subway #1 to 66th St-Lincoln Center. Mid-April to mid-Oct
dawn to dusk. MAP
This swathe of green, named after the fifteen acres of commons where sheep grazed until
1934, is crowded in the summer with picnic blankets.
Two grass courts used for lawn bowling and croquet are found on a hill near the meadow's
northwest corner; to the southeast lie volleyball courts. On warm weekends, the area
