This peaceful pocket of the park is dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, who was
murdered in 1980 in front of his home, the
Dakota Building
. The tragic event is memorial-
ized with a round Italian mosaic with the word “Imagine” at its centre, donated by Lennon's
widow, Yoko Ono.

The only formal element of the original Olmsted and Vaux plan, the
Bethesda Terrace
overlooks the lake; beneath the terrace is an elaborate arcade with tiled floors. The crowning
centrepiece of the
Bethesda Fountain
is the
Angel of the Waters
sculpture.
