The towering signs and flashing lights of Times Square, the blocks just north of 42nd
Street where Seventh Avenue intersects with Broadway, bring a whole new meaning to
the term “sensory overload”. More than 270,000 workers alone pass through daily and,
on New Year's Eve, hundreds of thousands more come to watch the apple drop at mid-
night. The seedy days are gone, but ostentatious displays of media and commercialism
still reign. The adjoining Theater District and its million-dollar Broadway productions
draw crowds, while Hell's Kitchen to the west offers innumerable restaurants as well as
some gritty nightlife. You may wind up spending a decent amount of time here - it's a
major hotel base and you'll probably want to take in a show or two - but there are few,
if any, must-see sights (other than the sheer spectacle).
