Once home of businessman John W. Campbell, who
oversaw the construction of Grand Central, this majestic
space - built to look like a thirteenth-century Florentine
palace - was sealed up for years. Now, it's one of New
York's most distinctive bars. Go early and don't wear
sneakers or a T-shirt.
KING COLE BAR & SALON
2 E 55th St between Fifth and Madison aves, in the St Regis Hotel. Subway E, M to Fifth Ave/53rd St; F
to 57th St. Mon-Sat 11.30am-1am, Sun noon-midnight. MAP
Dress smart and be prepared to spend at the reputed home of the Bloody Mary, but sip-
ping a cocktail under the Maxfield Parrish mural at the bar, you'll surely feel like a milli-
on bucks.
PJ CLARKE'S

212 317 1616. Daily
11.30am-4am. MAP
One of the city's most famous watering holes, PJ Clarke's alehouse serves good beers,
but only Guinness comes in a pint serving. Tables with red-and-white checked cloths
await diners in the back, where you can choose from a classic American menu. You may
recognize it as the setting of the film The Lost Weekend .
SALVATION TACO

St-Grand Central. 212 865 5800, www.salvationtaco.com . Daily 7am-2am. MAP
Hard to know what to label it - café, restaurant, gastrocantina - but Salvation Taco , in
all its garishly hued, folk-art aesthetic glory, is best as a bar for daring cocktails (around
$13) and inventive snacks, like a tostada with pig's ears and cheeks ($12).
