CHINATOWN
CANAL STREET
Subway A, C, E, J, N, Q, R, Z, #1, #6 to Canal St. MAP
Canal Street is Chinatown's main all-hours artery crammed with jewellery shops and
kiosks hawking sunglasses, T-shirts and fake Rolexes. At the eastern end of the thorough-
fare, the majestic Byzantine dome of the former Citizen's Savings Bank (now HSBC) and
the 1909 Manhattan Bridge's grand Beaux Arts entrance seem out of place amid the neon
signs and market stalls.

This elegant green-domed Georgian edifice is known as the “church of immigrants” for
good reason. Since opening in 1801 as a Lutheran parish, it has also served Irish and Italian
church-goers. Today, Mass is said daily in Cantonese, English and Mandarin.
