Formerly the ITA Aceer Tambopata Re-
search Center, Inkaterra's reconstructed lodge is an important research center, and of in-
terest to ecotourists, with an exhibition on conservation, occasional lectures and a laborat-
ory for scientists. It's built on the site of the house of one of the first doctors to practice in
the Amazon. The Hacienda Concepción lodge has a good restaurant and accommodations;
Inkaterra's Reserva Amazonica lodge is only 7km away.

as you travel away from Puerto Maldonado, irrespective of price.

The closest lodge to Puerto Maldonado is traveler
friendly and upbeat. Only 5km from town, this lodge offers 15 comfortable, fully
screened, high-ceilinged bungalows with solid mattresses, eye-catching Shipibo indigen-
ous wall art, patios with two hammocks, and cheerful decorative touches in the public
areas. Electricity is available from dusk until 10:30pm, and showers have hot water. The
French owners pride themselves on the excellent European-Peruvian fusion cuisine.

Just beyond Corto Maltes, this pleasant lodge offers 14
large, airy bungalows, each furnished with hot-water showers and copious supplies of
fresh drinking water, around a clearing in secondary jungle. The main restaurant-bar area
is convivial, with lots of board games. Included are trips to Lago Sandoval, a 5km walk
away, and Monkey Island (supposedly containing each of the Amazon's monkey species).
