174, Miraflores); Puerto Maldonado ( 082-57-2823; Cuzco 436; ) This bright, enti-
cing lodge is one of the southern Amazon's best. Facilities might be classic top-end Inka-
terra but the big draw is that its prices are not. Its spacious rooms, fashioned out of re-
claimed timber, make you feel quite the well-to-do early-20th-century traveler, and there
is a securely mosquito-netted bar, chill-out area and restaurant (serving incredible food).
The serene location could hardly be better, with an onsite rainforest learning center and
laboratory, its own private cocha (an indigenous word for lagoon) nearby and Lago San-
doval barely a stone's throw away. Electricity is from 5:30am to 9:30am and 6pm to
11pm: it's one of the few jungle lodges with cell-phone reception and wi-fi. Rooms are
spread around the 2nd floor surveying the forest clearing with a broad wrap-around ter-
race, while cabins have secluded cocha views - good enough, according to staff, for
celebrities such as Mick Jagger to favor. Book with Inkaterra.

Dios, almost 16km from Puerto Maldonado, this luxurious alternative offers a better look
at the jungle. Tours here include 10km of private hiking trails, and a series of swaying,
narrow, jungle canopy walkways up to 35m above the jungle floor for flora and fauna ob-
servation.
A huge, traditionally thatched, cone-shaped, two-story reception, restaurant, bar (built
spectacularly around a fig tree), library and relaxation area greets the arriving traveler.
Some of the southern Amazon's best meals are served here; travelers with special dietary
needs can be accommodated. There are occasional alfresco barbecues, sitting areas up-
stairs for imbibing views or spotting birdlife, and a separate building housing a good inter-
pretation center. Guides speak English, French or Italian. About 40 rustic individual cab-
ins have bathrooms and porches with two hammocks. Six suites boast huge bathrooms,
writing desks and two queen beds each.
