Tours & Guides
Local guides (inquire at the museums) will arrange trips to the tombs and various other
sites; some are easily visited on a day trip, while others require several days. Homer Ulli-
len, the son of the owner of the Albergue Turístico de la Laguna de los Cóndores
(Amazonas 320) , can guide you to sites near their land. Expect to pay around S50 per day
for a Spanish guide, S120 for English (not including food) and S30 for horses. Wira Wira
Tours ( 94-185-6029; bifar952@yahoo.com; Próspero, cuadra 3) also comes highly
recommended.
Sleeping & Eating
Unfortunately, all the good spots to eat are by the museum. There are a handful of poller-
ías and simple spots in town but NGO workers who spend considerable time in the area
won't vouch for any of them. In town, eat at La Casona.
Kentitambo $
( 97-111-8259; info@vilayatours.com; s/d incl breakfast S300/450; )
Owned by a multilingual gringa/Incan historian who was a member of the original team
who built the Museo Leimebamba, this wonderfully romantic, two-room guesthouse is an
exclusive design-forward getaway for discerning nature lovers. King-sized beds and
filtered rainwater showers are highlights of the colorful, rustic bungalows built in
earthquake-proof quincho style, but the real coup is the spacious front porches with ham-
mocks that reach out into the surrounding nature - perfect for ogling the exotic birdlife
that congregates on the property. It's next door to KentiKafé.
BOUTIQUE GUESTHOUSE
La Casona $$
( 83-0106; www.casonadeleymebamba.com ; Amazonas 221; s/d incl break-
fast S95/160; ) This friendly, rambling guesthouse run by a brother-sister team is
chock-full of antiquated character and homespun charm. Old rooms feature polished hard-
wood floors while all rooms feature new bathrooms with hot water. Breakfast is a real
treat, with an espresso machine along with homemade cheese, butter and milk from their
own cows. Some rooms have little balconies looking onto the quiet street below, others
have views over the town's tiled roofs and surrounding mountains. Nelly, the matriarch
here, runs a mean kitchen for guests; outsiders are welcome with advance notice.
