with a verdant courtyard and lots of comfortable sitting areas draped in thick, colorful
blankets. It has hot showers, cozy rooms and tours of the area can be arranged from here.
On the budget end, the shared bathrooms here get you the most character for the sole .

Leimebamba and perched on a hill with views of the museum and valley below,
KentiKafé maintains about a dozen feeders visited by the Marvelous Spatuletail Hum-
mingbird ( Click here ) and 16 other hummingbird species - they drink some 5kg of sugar
per day! You can lie in wait for glimpses of the Spatuletail while sipping super-fresh gour-
met coffee, and feasting on homemade cakes and wonderful sandwiches such as chicken
and avocado; or pay S10 to visit the feeders further afield in a quieter area away from es-
presso cup clanking.
CAFE
El Mishqui $
( 95-355-2111; Austria s/n; menús S15-18; 7am-10pm) The cute cook here, Doris,
takes her role as a chef seriously, donning the hat and all. You'll need to call in advance,
but she whips up clean, downhome menús from the front of her home, complete with
fancy tablecloths and cutlery. It's across the street from the museum.

The 2960-hectare Abra Patricia-Alto Nieva Private Conservation Area ( 084-24-5256; www.ecoanperu.org ;

Pedro Ruíz on the road to Moyobamba (reachable by S35 colectivo from Nuevo Cajamarca), is a bird-watcher's
paradise managed by the Association of Andean Ecosystems (ECOAN). More than 300 species call this area home,
23 of which are considered globally threatened. ECOAN's Owlet Lodge offers large and exceptionally clean, quiet
rooms for nature lovers and anyone who just wants to get away from the noise of civilization. The gourmet meals
are served in a dining room with views of mountainous forest that has never seen the swipe of a chainsaw. Although
