In-Depth Information
( 52-2966; Mayor Bodero 118; s/d/tr S40/60/70; ) Clean, safe and friendly, the
Lourdes offers austere (for Tumbes) rooms with fans, phones, TV and hot showers.
GUESTHOUSE
Hospedaje Italia $
( 52-3396; Grau 733; s/d/tr S25/40/50) The Italia is a good deal for double rooms, each
of which has plenty of natural light and space, tiled floors and TVs as standard, but the
lack of wi-fi is its downfall.
Hospedaje Amazonas $
( 52-5266; Tumbes 317; s/d/tr S30/45/55) This place is old, but the coat of paint being
slapped on as we visited signifies some presence of maintenance. Big rooms here cut the
mustard for a night, with fans, hot water and TV. Perhaps its best attribute is being next
door to Cruz del Sur.
GUESTHOUSE
Eating
There are several bars and restaurants on the Plaza de Armas, many with shaded tables
and chairs outside - a real boon in hot weather. It's a pleasant place to sit and watch the
world go by as you drink a cold beer and wait for your bus.
Restaurant Sí Señor $$
(Bolívar 115; mains S15-35) On a quiet corner of the plaza with pleasant street-
side tables outside and quixotic, slow-turning fans inside, Sí Señor is the long-standing
staple doing all manner of everything, with a heavy emphasis on fish and seafood. The
dizzying menu left us indecisive, so the waiter recommended a ginger-steamed fish that
didn't look like much upon arrival, but proved to be a most tasty, healthy dinner. Good
stuff.
PERUVIAN, SEAFOOD
Moka $
( www.mokatumbes.com ; Bolognesi 252; snacks S5-10; 8am-1pm & 4:30-11pm) This
modern cafe is so wildly out of place in Tumbes that it turns heads. You'll find loads of
scrumptious cakes, flavored frappuccinos, juices, milkshakes and not-quite-right espresso
(but from a proper machine nonetheless). The good menu of croissantwiches makes for a
lovely quick bite or breakfast (try chicken salad with avocado).
Don't confuse this with their ice-cream parlor two doors down, unless you're going for
the sweets.
