In-Depth Information
( 41-1599; www.lasponcianashotel.com ; Panamericana Norte Km 376; s/d incl break-
fast S125/175; ) Just a block off the main highway and six blocks from the Plaza
de Armas, this tranquil place is in a hushed spot and boasts several pools (including one
for the kiddies). It's very popular with Peruvian families and offers throwback '70s resort
luxury that may or may not hold nostalgic value depending on your perspective.
El Tío Sam $
( 71-1447; Huarmey 138; mains S14-20) Part chifa (Chinese restaurant), part regional
cuisine, this is your best bet in Casma, bipolarity notwithstanding. In fact, their ceviche,
which outclasses the town, was Ancash's best in 2010. There are also lots of fried things,
too, along with good-looking steaks and seafood.

La Careta $
(Peru 885; mains S9.50-34.50; from 6pm, closed Tue) This popular, orange-table-
clothed meatery serves sizzling grills nightly amid an odd decorative duo of bullfighting
paintings and model cars. All plates come with fries and a salad - not bad - though the in-
door potted plants are the most impressive 'greens' in the house.
STEAKHOUSE
Walter's $
(Bolivar s/n; mains S4.50-18) Along a line of worthy options one half-block south of
Plaza de Armas, Walter's is a decent breakfast spot if its popularity with the Policía Na-
cional is any indication. There are a few combos, which you can switch up with scrambled
eggs if you wish.
PERUVIAN
Information
There's a branch of BCP ( 71 1314, 71 1471; Bolívar 111) here. Several internet cafes
line the plaza.
Getting There & Away
Colectivo taxis to Chimbote leave frequently from the ETACSA/Las Casmeños (
46-5083; Nepeña s/n) office a half block east of Plaza de Armas.
