»Owing perhaps to its undeveloped tourist industry, accommodation in Somaliland is gen-
erally good value compared to neighbouring countries. Not surprisingly, Hargeisa has the
widest choice of available options.
»Budget rooms are no-frills, with a narrow double bed (or twin beds), neon lights, a fan
and shared showers. The shower is usually a bucket-and-scoop affair in the bathtub. Towels
and soap are usually not provided.
»In larger towns you can find at least one comfortable midrange option with reliable hot
shower, air-con and wireless internet.
»Upmarket hotels are confined to the capital and are mainly aimed at aid workers and other
NGO and UN employees travelling in the country, as well as businesspeople. Although ba-
sic by international standards, these hotels have rooms with private shower, air-con and
satellite TV. They also have restaurants and offer wi-fi, and breakfast is sometimes in-
cluded in the room price. The better hotels are typically found on the outskirts of town to
offer calm and security. They can organise tours and can help with visa matters and organ-
ising an armed guard.
»A room with a double bed is usually called a 'single', and a room with twin beds a
'double'. In our reviews we've used the Western interpretation of singles, doubles and
twins. In some places you'll just be quoted a flat rate for the room irrespective of occu-
pancy.
»There are no campsites.
»All places to stay quote their prices in US dollars. Note that payment is by cash only -
even larger hotels don't take credit cards.
