In-Depth Information
Metu (bus/minibus Birr64/80, three hours). An early- morning bus occasionally leaves for
Tepi (Birr150, 12 hours), although it may be easier to go to Gore first and change there.
The border to South Sudan is firmly closed to foreigners (but locals can cross).
However, there's local talk of this changing so it's worth enquiring. If it opens then buses
go to the border town of Jikawo (Birr70, 4½ hours) daily at 6am.
Getting Around
A short hop in a shared bajaj around town costs Birr3, but they can be contracted for Bir-
r15. The only option besides walking is cycling.
Ethiopian Airlines provides transport to and from the airport, which is 16.5km south of
town. Passengers meet at the airline office first and, if the flight hasn't been cancelled,
proceed to the airport together.
Both the Gambela National Park Headquarters and the Culture and Tourism Bureau
claimed they could organise a 4WD (Birr2000 per day including driver but excluding
fuel), but when push came to shove, it turned out both cars were inoperable. If you man-
age to hire the park's car then park entry and guide fees are waived.
