surrounded by Nuer tribesman, this is travel at its rawest.

The electricity supply can only be described as erratic, and usually cuts out halfway
through composing an email. If you get sick, head to Metu - Gambela's hospital is grim.

Getting There & Away
Ethiopian Airlines ( 0475-510099; www.flyethiopian.com ) flies to and from Addis
Ababa (Birr3413, 1ΒΌ hours) on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Flights are frequently
cancelled during the rainy season.
One bus leaves daily at 6am for Addis Ababa (Birr240, two days) overnighting en
route. Another bus goes to Bedele (Birr100, nine hours, 6am departure) and several go to
