Getting There & Around
Buses and minibuses leave roughly every 20 minutes for Addis Ababa (Birr10, 1½ hours)
and Nazret (Birr16, 40 minutes).
From the bus station to the turn-offs for the Lake Bishoftu hotels, a shared/contract ba-
jaj costs Birr2/10; to Lake Babogaya is Birr4/40.
Awash National Park
Easily accessible from Addis Ababa, 756-sq-km Awash National Park (per person per
day Birr90, vehicle Birr20; 6am-7pm) is one of Ethiopia's most visited parks.
However, if you're here for the thrill of staring slack-jawed at lions crunching through
bones, you'll be seriously disappointed. It's much lower-key and ongoing incursions by
Kereyu pastoralists have done little to help wildlife numbers. Nevertheless, it's a must for
birders and the volcanic landscape of blister cones and fissures is interesting and beauti-
ful. If the latter interests you, try to find a copy of Frances Williams' excellent self-pub-
lished booklet Awash National Park, Ethiopia: Geology and Scenery in a Unique Envir-
onment in Addis or at Awash Falls Lodge.
