( 0116-632424; Cape Verde St; mains Birr50-70, 1kg of meat Birr160; noon-2pm &
6pm-midnight) Shangri-la has earned a well-deserved reputation as an atmospheric place
for great Ethiopian food, especially tere sega (raw meat; available Saturday only). Fasting
food is the way to go on Wednesday and Friday. There's an outdoor dining area with an
open fire, and a cosy bar serving quality tej (honey wine).

( 0911-2134811; Mike Leyland St; pizzas 65-85; noon-midnight) If Addis has
something that could be described as a 'boutique' pizza place then this would have to be
it. It's small, warm and welcoming, with thin-crust pizzas popping out of the pizza oven to
satisfy a young and cool local crowd. Upstairs is an equally intimate bar. The sign is writ-
ten in Amharic only - the rough translation is 'efoy', which is the sort of sighing noise a
contented person makes.

( 0116-184363; Bole Rd; mains Birr115) Feel on top of the world and enjoy the views
over the city at this 5th-floor restaurant inside the Boston Day building. The menu, which
takes in steaks, Mexican and pastas, spans the world in all its culinary loveliness. Sadly, it
also has the world's most uncomfortable chairs!

(Bole Rd; mains Birr50-75; 7am-11pm) The evergreen, ever-lime Lime Tree remains
one of the hippest places in Addis to have a light lunch. The menu includes such delights
as pita stuffed with tabouli or felafel, and chicken coconut curry, and it sells what we are
assured is the best carrot cake in Addis. It's an essential on the expat circuit and there's an
in-house bookshop and useful noticeboard for those setting up home in Addis.
