Zandee and Roos (1987) criticized the use of consensus techniques
to obtain the general area cladogram, but Page (1990a) clarified that con-
sensus trees are not the only way to obtain a general area cladogram. Al-
ternatively, component analysis has been criticized for its preference for
assumptions 1 and 2 instead of assumption 0, which Wiley (1987, 1988a,
1988b) considered more parsimonious. Lieberman (2004) argued that the
presence of artificial incongruence due to extinct clades may lead to prob-
lems with component analysis because it is not designated to deal with any
sort of incongruence. However, I argue that this represents a problem for all
cladistic biogeographic methods.
