In-Depth Information
Alec and Emma, a charming and knowledgeable couple who run budget-minded safaris to
their camp just outside Kafue proper (Lower Zambezi trips are in the planning stage).
Alec's sister is to take over, which might lead to an expansion and other changes.
Simply furnished rooms line a single hallway with a stocked kitchen (coffee and toast
and scones for breakfast) and living room at one end. Out back is a small pool and
members-only bar (guests of course are considered members) with a TV tuned to interna-
tional sporting events, pool table and menu of hearty steaks and other fare.

( 0211-254664; www.proteahotels.com/lusaka ; Great East Road, Arcades Shopping
Centre; r US$215; ) With direct access to Arcades Shopping Centre, this Protea is
comfortable and convenient, though it might feel rather interchangeable with wherever
you are flying into Zambia from - it's part of a large South African chain with a Cairo Rd
location and others elsewhere in the country. The spacious wood-floored rooms come with
the standard bells and whistles; the pool, however, is small and in an uninviting 2nd floor
outdoor enclosure.

( 0977 805483; www.lusakabackpackers.com ; 161 Mulombwa Cl; dm ZMW75, r with/

place (formerly Chachacha) is the obvious choice for those on a budget in Lusaka. The
centrepiece of activity - and a good place for meeting other independent travellers - is the
patio area out front with a small pool and bar, which can get lively and loud, especially on
weekends.
The backyard accommodation options are better all-round than those up front: a mixed
dorm is nicer and quieter than the smaller and barer ones up front; there are two basic sa-
fari tents; the simply furnished A-frame double and 'log cabin' are probably the most
pleasant. Other facilities include a restaurant (serving basic meals); a tub for doing laun-
dry; a communal, dilapidated kitchen and baggage storage. Organises trips to Kafue Na-
tional Park, Lower Zambezi National Park, South Luangwa National Park and Living-
stone. Airport transfer available.
