Getting There & Away
Zomba is on a main route between Lilongwe and Blantyre. The bus station is in the town
centre, off Namiwawa Rd. AXA buses run to/from Lilongwe (MK2000, five to six hours),
Blantyre (MK750, 1½ to two hours), Liwonde (MK650, one hour) and Nkhata Bay
(MK3950) via Mangochi (MK1000) and Mzuzu (MK4000).
Minibuses go every hour or so to Limbe (MK1000, one hour) and also head to Lilong-
we (MK2000, four to five hours), Liwonde (MK700, 45 minutes) and Mangochi
(MK800).
THE POTATO PATH
The Potato Path is the Zomba Plateau's most popular hike; it's a direct route from Zomba town leading all the way
up to the plateau. Look for the signpost at a sharp bend on the main road to the plateau, some 2km from Zomba
town. The path climbs steeply through woodland to near Ku Chawe Inn.
From here, the Potato Path then goes straight across the southern half of the plateau, sometimes using the park
tracks, sometimes using narrow short cuts, and leads eventually to Old Ngondola Village, from where it descends
quite steeply into the Domasi Valley, well known for its fertile soil and good farming conditions. Here locals grow
potatoes and take them along the Potato Path (hence the name) down to Zomba town to sell.
Allow two to three hours for the ascent, and about 1½ hours coming down.
