the same price, also at 6.00am (get there a half hour early for a good seat). The Taqwa
bus ( 0999-670468) departs from Devil St at 7pm on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday for
the 27-hour journey to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), continuing on to Nairobi (Kenya).
Getting Around
To/From the Airport
Lilongwe International Airport is 21km north of the city. A taxi from the airport into town
costs MK8000. Maddeningly, there is currently no airport bus.
Public Transport
The most useful local minibus service for visitors is between Old Town and City Centre.
From Old Town, local minibuses (marked Area 12) leave from either the bus rank near the
market or next to Shoprite. They then head north up Kenyatta Rd, via Youth and Conven-
tion Drs or via Independence Dr, to reach City Centre. From City Centre back to Old
Town, the bus stop for the return journey is at the northern end of Independence Dr.
Taxi
Offline map Google map
The best places to find taxis are the main hotels. There's a rank on Presidential Way, just
north of City Centre Shopping Centre. Taxis also congregate outside Shoprite in Old
Town. The fare between Old Town and City Centre is about MK2500. Short journeys
within City Centre or Old Town cost around MK1500. Negotiate a price with the driver
first. Charlie Kandoje ( 0888-953373, 0999-935281) is particularly reliable, with two
cabs and one 7-seater minibus. He can take you around the city for a half-day for as little
as MK6500.
