seating makes a lovely place to camp: watch for hippos and monitor lizards. The entrance
to Brenda's (which is well hidden from the main drag) is 200m on the western side of the
church on the main street, down an unmarked road towards the river.

Sioma Ngwezi National Park
This undeveloped, very remote and rarely visited 500 sq km national park (per person/
vehicle per day US$5/15) is one to watch for future developments given its proximity to
Livingstone and with plans for the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Park (KAZA) slowly
moving forward. It's in the southwestern corner of Zambia, bordering Angola and the
Caprivi Strip in Namibia; it's also only 50km from Botswana. The park is dry, quite flat
and forested with miombo and acacia woodland with areas of teak forest. It's unfenced
and there is free movement of animals between the park and the surrounding Game Man-
agement Area (GMA). The park has a history of cross-border poaching problems and
wildlife is scarce, although elephants still do occur in reasonable numbers. There are few
roads and no permanent settlements. If you want to visit, it's worth contacting Mutemwa
Lodge ( 0927-11 234 1747; www.mutemwa.com ) , located not far from the park, which
sometimes runs safaris here.
An independent trip is possible but very difficult - you need to be completely self-suffi-
cient and have a fully equipped 4WD. Begin by heading to Sioma and picking up a scout
from the National Parks & Wildlife Service office.
EXCURSION INTO BOTSWANA & NAMIBIA
Both Botswana and Namibia are short drives away if you're in the southwest of Zambia, and both make excellent
excursions, even for a few days, although a week or longer would be ideal. The two countries are also easily ac-
cessible from Livingstone.
