In-Depth Information
Wudaokou's cafes are important places for study, relaxation, and language exchanges.
Housing
Despite the number of students and universities in the area, housing is not cheap in
Wudaokou. Sure, there are hovels, which you might be able to rent out for under RMB2,000
per month, but these are likely to be single rooms with boarding-house-style shared facil-
ities. For one-bedroom places be prepared to spend RMB4,000-6,000 per month. Some of
the better-known compounds in the area include Dongshengyuan ( 东升园 ) and Huaqing
Jiayuan ( 华清家园 ), both on Caijing Donglu, which runs directly along the southwest side
of Wudaokou subway station. Both are popular local housing communities with reasonable
apartments that go for about this price range. Just outside their gates are Wudaokou's fa-
vorite establishments—the Bridge Café, Sculpting in Time Café, and bars Propaganda and
Lush. On the northwest side of BLCU (Beijing Language and Culture University), Dong-
wangzhuang ( 东王庄 ) can be cheaper, though a little run down, while Furun Jiayuan ( 富润
家园 ) on the east side of BLCU is a little pricier but much more modern. Setting yourself
up with an apartment can take as little as a day or two if you're in a rush. Visit the real estate
agents on Caijing Donglu and inside Huaqing Jiayuan, some of whom can speak English,
and they'll take you around.
