In-Depth Information
down the street is an offshoot called Dashilan. This is also a tourist trap, but the farther in
you go, the more interesting it gets, and it's a fun place to go to at night for street food and
local cuisine. For a really special way to dine, try Capital M at the north end of Qianmen
Jie. This will be the place you come to when you yearn for a weekend morning brunch, or
for when you need a romantic night out.
For groceries, head to Carrefour on Guangqumennei Daijie, just east of Ciqikou subway
station. Like all the Carrefour supermarkets, this monster has stress-inducing weekend
crowds, reasonable prices, and a good range of imported goods—for far less than what
you'll pay in one of the international supermarkets. There's also a big collection of Wu
Marts close by, including by the subway at Tiantan Dongmen and just north of Longtan
Park. If you're near Chongwenmen, you'll never go hungry, with major supermarkets in
both Glory Mall and New World Department Store. The popular Chongwenmen Vegetable
Market used to be in the area, but now it's nudged over into Chaoyang district, sitting at
number 1 Guangqumenwai Daijie, but it's still worth a visit if you live close by.
Western-style pharmacies are farther from reach here. Wangfujing Drug Store is your
closest bet, otherwise there are various local options, including a Tongrentang store just
west of Ciqikou subway station on Zhushikou Dongdajie and a Golden Elephant Pharmacy
in New World Department Store at Chongwenmen.
