wonders at home. It simply wouldn't occur to Australians to junk their
country. Australia is so clean; since I've been running, only Canada has
come close. Mexico, Central and South America and large parts of the
United States? Forget it.
Because of the garbage, there is also a perpetual rat plague here.
I see the rodents everywhere, many being squished on the road. And
don't get me started about the dogs! It seems that everyone owns
about three dogs, and they roam free. They're aggressive and bark at
me, chasing me and snapping their jaws. I've been bitten on the legs a
number of times.
Another unpleasant fact of life in South America, as we also found
in parts of Central America, is drunkenness. I can't believe the number
of drunk men I've come across. They drink themselves into a stupor
and fall where they stand until they regain consciousness. There are
blotto bodies strewn everywhere. The worry is that they are often, like
the dogs, aggressive to me. The dogs have sharp teeth; the humans
have machetes.
My lips, feet and knees are hurting badly. I don't have time to take
