El Salvador is a blink-and-you-miss-it country. My route through
it has been just 220 kilometres long. No sooner, it seems, did I enter it
than I've reached the other side. If all goes to plan, I'll be crossing the
border into Honduras after dark on August 31, and in that country I'll
have an even shorter distance to run, around 100 kilometres, across
the lower corner. And then it's Nicaragua.

The roads are far better in El Salvador than the potholed death traps of
Guatemala. This is because El Salvador is the recipient of US govern-
ment aid. Likewise, the US Red Cross pours funds into the Salvadoran
Red Cross, and there is a lot to spend them on. I have to say, the food
in El Salvador has been irst-class. As in all of Central America, the
local produce is terrific, but in this country it's cooked in an Ameri-
can or Italian style, because, thanks to US money, El Salvador is more
