I went to say g'day to the great monuments of the city. I have no
time for sight-seeing on this run, but there was no way, having come
so far, that I'd miss out on paying homage at the mighty Washington
Monument, which is ringed by US flags, and at the Lincoln Memorial.
I doffed my cap at the foot of the great statue. Its plaque reads, 'In this
temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union the
memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.' On the way to the
memorial, I visited the Reflecting Pool, which was created to reflect
the images of the monuments along the Mall. It featured in the movie
Forrest Gump , whose lead character, who runs and runs and runs, I
have so often been likened to by both foes and friends. Unfortunately,
the pool was a construction siteā€”no water at all, just tractors and
churned- up earth.
I couldn't leave the national capital without dropping in at the
American Red Cross headquarters on E Street NW. There, I was given
