I would love Brooke to be a doctor one day. Not so she can afford
to drive a Mercedes-Benz and live in a nice home, but so she can heal
people. Her mother died of heart disease, and if she became a cardi-
ologist that would be a nice symmetry. She has other plans, however,
and has set her heart on being a singer, songwriter and dancer after
studying at the Sydney Conservatorium or perhaps the Juilliard School
in the United States. Dillon has no idea what he wants to do when
he grows up. He's a typical 13-year-old boy. At school his favourite
subjects are basketball and lunch. He's not bad at maths but has no
interest in reading.

After five days of running on busy, dirty and, it has to be said, other-
wise nondescript urban roads from New York City, I arrived in
Washington DC, seat of the United States government, where Barack
Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their kids occupy the White House. The
Obamas weren't there to welcome me, of course, but Allen Lew, the
