Finally, I'm in New York. The last time I was here was in January, when
it was -10 degrees and I was dragging tyres through the thick snow in
Central Park. People laughed at me and wondered who the crackpot
was. It feels good to be back, with the North Pole and Canada under
my belt.
It's been a full day. I've done the rounds of the talk shows, whip-
ping up donations for the cause and proving that I am a man of my
word: when last I was interviewed here, I said I would do this run, and
here I am doing it.
First thing on today's agenda was to run from the tip of Manhat-
tan to Central Park, where the media, including a crew from the Nine
Network's Today show, were waiting. I had a special running compan-
ion, a member of the New York fire brigade, Denis Sweeney. He has
completed nine consecutive New York marathons and is one of the
brigade's finest runners. We joked about the number of cats he's res-
cued from trees as we ran to the fabled park. On the way through upper
