The enormous 6,600-acre
Rainbow Lake Wilderness Area
lies southwest of Delta
along Forest Road 228. Off-limits to motorized anything, it's prime backwoods land for
hikers and canoeists. The North Country Trail cuts through for six miles; Tower Lake, one
oftheforest'smostisolated,islinkedtothetrailbyanaccessroute.ReynardandWishbone
Lakes are good for canoers and birders.
The
Valkyrie
multiuse trail is accessible west of Washburn off Highway C. One of the
most respected trail systems in the forest, it departs near the Mt. Valhalla Winter Sports
Area (an old ski jump hill).
The
Drummond Trail

Scenic Trail intersects a Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike trail network northwest of
town.

Grove,
12 miles west of Washburn. There are some decently secluded sites here on a long
lake, and, man, are loons loud around here. The Valhalla Trail is accessible from here for
hikers and mountain biking.
