miles through the forest and exits five miles southwest of Iron River. Some 150
miles of Wisconsin's projected 225 miles are done. When completed, it will be the
longest unbroken walking path in the United States at 3,200 miles, stretching from
Crown Point, New York, to Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, where it will link with
the Lewis and Clark and then Pacific Crest Trail to total out at 4,600 miles. Check

The Chequamegon National Forest walking trail, in fact, inspired the whole trail
and lent its name.
Around Black Lake and leading from the campground, an interpretive trail details the
lake'spineandhemlock“eras,”startingaround1880andlastinguntiltheGreatDepression.
The very much praised Rock Lake Trail Cluster is a system of six interconnecting
loops for hikers, skiers, and mountain bikers.
Camping
The Hayward District has what may be the most primitive camping experience in the park:
Black Lake, 26 miles east of Hayward.
Not far from Black Lake, Moose Lake is accessible off WIS 77 east of Hayward. The
fishing is not bad.
Seventeen miles east of Cable on Highway M and then north on Highway D and west
on Forest Road 209, is Namekagon, offering 33 campsites (full of RVs). Easily accessible
from here are biking trails and the North Country Scenic Trail.

Sights and Recreation
The stands of Norway and red pine in this district of the forest were among the purest and
densest ever found during the last century. The Drummond Rust-Owen Mill Reservoir
is the last residual of a sawmill dating from 1883. Built from fieldstone and displaying a
uniqueconicalsilo,itwasusedtopowerthemillsinDrummond—oneofthelargest50-odd
lumber towns that sprouted in northern Wisconsin. Though the roof has fallen and weeds
