NORTHERN HIGHLAND AMERICAN LEGION STATE FOREST
Most of the lakes region is subsumed by this largest of Wisconsin's state forests—225,000
acres. Its proximity to the frenetic tourist towns of Minocqua and Woodruff bring an estim-
ated two million visitors per annum. Today, anglers rival pleasure boaters and canoeists for
the 54,000 acres of surface water on 930 lakes and 250 miles of rivers and streams.
This is muskie country. Anglers may claim to be looking for other lunkers, but every-
body knows that most are secretly lobbing and reeling, hoping for that Moby Muskie
trophy. The region is at friendly war with the Hayward area for bragging rights.
