SNOWMOBILE CENTRAL
The first snowmobile was built in Sayner.
Something inspired Carl Eliason to strap a small gas-powered boat engine onto a
toboggan, pound on some turnable skis, and let himself loose across the ice near
Sayner, Wisconsin, in 1924. Voilà!—the first modern snowmobile was patented in
1927.
Wisconsin's populace sleds more than any state. More than 25,000 miles of well-
tracked trails are maintained by dozens and dozens of snow clubs throughout the
north—the nation's most extensive network. And these are just maintained trails;
Wisconsin Trail number 15 bisects the state southeast to northwest—a seeming mil-
lion frozen miles aboard a sled. One-quarter of the nation's 2.7 million sleds are in
Wisconsin, and tourism for 'biling equals that generated by certain western states'
skiindustries (some northern resorts make 85percent oftheir income fromsnowmo-
bilers). Snowgoer magazine readers consistently rate northeast Wisconsin tops in the
country.
