Highway signage, once woefully inadequate, has improved (but is not perfect). Keep in

You're likely going to get lost trying to find Bull Falls, Eight Foot Falls, and Horseshoe
Falls (great waterfalls, but really tricky to find), among others, and your teeth will rattle
some.

on Morgan Park Road. A quarter-mile from the pull-off area, the Pembonwon River is
channeled over a 50-foot drop, and the water's great in summer. You can climb down right
atop the main roaring channel—magnificent. Smalley Falls is just upstream. A few miles
east you'll find Morgan Park.

onto U.S. 8 and cross into Michigan. Just south of Norway, Michigan, Piers Gorge offers
a secluded, fantastic hike alongside the Menominee River, especially early in the morning.
Imagine ramming three million board feet of lumber through here.
If you want to hang your hat where some shady characters used to, head for the
Miscauno Island Four Seasons Resort (N16800 Shoreline Dr., 877/324-5244,
www.fourseasonswi.com , $159) near Pembine. Twice owned by purported “criminal ele-
ments” dating from the 1930s, its recent incarnation is as a comfy resort.
