Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest: Nicolet Side
The Nicolet is named for Jean Nicolet, the first intrepid European to arrive in Green Bay
in 1634. This section of Wisconsin's capacious national forest is very nearly the state's per-
fect approximation of the “Great North Woods experience”—about 666,000 acres in all,
with 1,400 miles of fishable stream and more than 1,200 lakes, many grade A1 for lunkers.

stands ofmajestic trees—some just a scant few—that somehow managed to escape logging
a century ago; trees 200-400 years old are found in the forest.
