www.heidelhouse.com , dinner Tues.-Sat., brunch Sun., dinner Thurs.-Sat. in off-season) in
the Heidel House Resort and Conference Center. Housed in an 1890s building, the charm-

WAUPACA AND THE CHAIN O' LAKES
The Waupaca area lies at the western edge of the east-central waters region and qualifies as
hydrophilic: 22spring-fedlakes southwest ofWaupaca formoneofthelongest recreational
stretches in the lower half of Wisconsin—240 lakes in the county alone. Settlement began
in the region around 1848; the first flour mill went up a year after the state's birth. The city
was named for an altruistic Potawatomi chief, Sam Waupaca, who collapsed and died after
convincing local Natives not to kill the white settlers.
