The architectural renaissance isimpressive; it'sgotten sopopular that WIS22wasrerouted
around the town to avoid spoiling it. You can't help but notice Rustic Roads 23 and 24,
which form a V around Hartman Creek State Park here. Drive them. You'll pass over three
stone bridges to cross the Crystal River, and you can stop and relax at a gurgling spring-fed
trout stream.
Another short jaunt out of the city via Highway K takes you to Red Mill. The biggest
waterwheelinthestate,it'sbeenconvertedintoahodgepodgeofshopsofferinghandicrafts,
antiques, and lots and lots of scented candles in an original interior. One of the few extant
covered bridges in Wisconsin is also there (400 handcrafted oak pegs were used in its con-
struction),alongwiththeChapelintheWoods.RedMillliesalongabeautifulstretchofthe
Crystal River with a picturesque park.
Scenic Drive
South of Waupaca along Highway E (itself fairly narrow) is Saxeville and, still farther
south, 26th Road, along Highway W out oftown; 26th Road stretches to Highway Halong
the Pine River Valley, a Class II trout stream. This drive passes several dwellings—one a
log cabin—predating the Civil War.
