wineryinWisconsin,housedinwhatwasoncetheAhnapeeBrewery(namedafterthelocal
river), built in the 1850s, whose three-foot-thick limestone walls are a ready-made under-
ground catacomb system. The house specialty is cherry wine; many other Wisconsin fruit
wines are produced, all guarded by a patented system to prevent premature aging and light
damage.
Algoma is also the southern terminus of the
Ahnapee State Trail,
a section of the Ice
Age National Scenic Trail stretching 18 miles partially along the Ahnapee River to the
southern fringe of Sturgeon Bay. Another trail runs from Algoma to Casco.
