In-Depth Information
South of town via WIS 42 and then west on County Road J brings you to
Parallel
44 Winery
(N2185 Sleepy Hollow Rd., 920/388-4400,
www.parallel44.com
)
, which pro-
duces Frozen Tundra wines. It may sound strange, but the wine is oddly appealing. The co-
owner's father came from Italy. Tours are available (generally 10:30am-3:30pm Fri.-Mon.
April-Oct.).
At
Svoboda Industries
along WIS 42 North, you'll see what is purportedly the world's
largest grandfather clock—39 feet tall.
The local visitors information center (920/388-4822 or 800/666-8214,
www.kewaunee.org
)
is right on WIS 42, north of downtown, near a great marsh walk.
Accommodations
On the harbor is the
Harrison Harbour House
(920/388-0606, $35), built for a former
governor and best described by the proprietors as a “hunting cabin for fishermen,” with
bunk beds, stone walls, rough-hewn board ceilings, and a definite feel of lake life. It isn't
for everyone, but some folks just groove on it.
The
Kewaunee Inn
(122 Ellis St., 920/388-3800,
www.kewauneeinn.com
, from $90) is
in a period of transition from previous owners. The 1912 arts and crafts structure has grand
potential, yet reviews have been extremely mixed. Check out many rooms (the staff have
encouraged it). Oh, and it's haunted, apparently.
If Harrison Harbour House is too rustic and Kewaunee Inn too pricey, the
Coho Motel
(705 Main St., 920/388-3565,
cohomotel.com
, $70) has always been an amazingly clean
place for the few bucks you pay.
Food
The local specialty is Czechoslovakian and Bohemian food, including
kolace
(yeast buns
with fruit filling) and
buhuite
(pronounced bu-ta—thin dough filled with seeds or fruit),
sauerkraut rye bread, and
rohlik.
These delectable baked goods are available at
Tom's

a couple of places for great smoked fish.
The whole drive along WIS 42 from Manitowoc to Algoma is spectacular—a resplendent,
beach-hugging route. As you swoop into Algoma from the south, seemingly endless miles
of wide, empty beach begin, both road and beach unencumbered by travelers. This freshly
